Full-Screen Safari

In an effort to practice for Google's Chrome OS, I got a Safari plugin to get a full screen browser going...

It's not too difficult to setup, just use the Saft plugin (download link). Once downloaded, drag into your applications, then run it.

When it gives you the two options of which one you want to use, pick "Install as InputManager plugin".

Now, restart Safari and then you'll get a "Full Screen" option in the "File" menu, or you can use the keyboard shortcut ⌘+ctrl+f.

Free Games for your Mac

There are some free time-killer mac games that you can download online for those really boring classes where you don't have an internet connection. Here is a list of some of my favorites...

Here is a site that claims to have the "40 best free mac games" but considering they don't have Point of View I'm not sure if that claim is accurate.

Switching Between Windows

In Windows it's really easy to just use alt+tab to switch between all of your open windows. On your Mac it is a little bit different, it's split into two different commands.
⌘+tab switches between open applications
⌘+` (that's the tick above the tab key, not an apostrophe) switches between windows of a specific application

Hiding Windows

In Leopard if you want to minimize a window you can double click on the title bar of that window and it will minimize into the Dock as you probably know. If you want to hide the current window but don't want it showing up in the Dock you can type ⌘+h. The window will be hidden and you can bring it back by clicking on that program's icon at the bottom of the page.

Watch this screencast and you'll see what I'm talking about...

Change System Icons

If you need to change some system icons (Finder, Trash, Folders, etc...) use this program, (the previous post on changing icons only works for applications). It's free and seems to work pretty well. You just drag and drop the new icons onto the icons that you want to replace and then "Apply Changes" and then "Relaunch Finder"

Send Large Files to Friends

If you need to send a file that's too big to email, use a file transfer website like www.transferbigfiles.com. It's really easy to use, just watch this video for a demonstration...

Who ever you sent the file to will get an email that looks like this:
You have been sent one or more files through the free TransferBigFiles.com service. To retrieve your file(s), use the following link:

http://www.transferbigfiles.com/Get.aspx?id=d4ad9e0d-2939-4989-b2bb-0b75c2d09d73

Thank you for using TransferBigFiles.com!
That link will take them to a page like this where they can download that file that you sent. (The download link is circled in red here for you)

Post Requests

Okay, a big part of this blog is going to be based off of requests... if there is something you can't figure out on your computer, post a comment here and let me know and I'll try to address it directly.

Change Application Icons

Getting a new icon for an application on your Leopard Mac is simple.
  • Go to your applications folder
  • Find the application that you want to edit
  • Ctrl+Click on the application and select "Get Info"
  • Open the new icon and select the whole image "Edit->Select All"
  • Copy the new icon
  • Click on the original application icon and paste
There you go. If this program is in your Dock then after you replace the icon, you'll have to quit the program, remove it from your Dock and then add it back into your dock.

If you want to find new icons go to Interfacelift.com

2D Dock in Leopard

In the Terminal type:
"defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES"
"killall Dock"
That's all there is to it.
To reverse it (go back to 3D) do the same thing except replace "YES" with "NO"
